Becoming A “Real” Designer

Becoming A “Real” Designer

Whether you are a newbie or a fresh graduate who wants to start a career as a graphic designer, remember that there is always someone better than you, so what you need to do is take action and improve yourself by continuously learning and developing your skills.

If you want to become a great designer, you need to understand the bigger picture about the field in order to be truly successful in your career.

These 4 things are essential for you to know:

Understand Formal Concepts

Why do things look the way they do? You need to understand this concept to have a deeper understanding about the relationship between type, forms and images and how it conveys the message to the target audience.

An easy example is an “a” must look visibly different from an “e,”, and if a “w” or a “m” is heavier or bigger than all the other letters, it is deemed distracting. This principle is important for branding, advertising campaigns and books.

The ‘What’ and ‘How’ of the method

Design method determines ‘what’ and ‘when’ with regards to doing things in a design project. This includes the process of creating a design encompassing research, ideation, prototyping, iteration, and presentation.

For example, a commercial website project may start with an analysis of available systems and the target audience, while the redesigning of a brand identity may begin with collecting images of competing and associated brands.

So from these objectives, you can formulate a rough idea about the methods required and start to learn this through practice. Most importantly, you need to have the skills to solve the design problem using your creativity.

Theory is important!

Most of you think that designers only need to practice without understanding the theory, but in reality, theory comes before practice. You need to understand that there are a lot of things that you need to discover through theory.

For example, what’s the influence of technology or tools on aesthetics? Do designers have ethical responsibilities? Is there such a thing as a mainstream culture and a counterculture today? Are there universal truths in design, or is everything relative?

It is all about techniques!

This is the part where you need to enhance your technical skills. When you recognize this, you are expected to know how to handle type, forms and images for both print and digital media using the latest software. You also need to be able to modify templates. So, be curious about any techniques designers require to improve your ability.

Other than that, it is important for designers to have the ability to write clearly for a specific audience, discuss a concept and present a project to a larger group to communicate design ideas.

In the creative industry, the designer plays an important role in an organisation. Therefore, it is crucial for you to know these 4 things.

Fortunately, you can obtain this knowledge through learning. Remember that designers are learning all the time and keep sharing with others to enhance the discipline. Read more about this here
