Behind The Musk

Who hasn’t heard of Elon Musk – the genius, billionaire, and philanthropist? The world’s own rendition of the real-life Tony Stark. Known for his revolutionary inventions of Tesla Motors, SolarCity, and SpaceX with a goal to colonise Mars in the future, he is known for pioneering the revolutionary creation of the technology that we use today, even with the rejections and recognition that he never gets.

Zip2

He originally wanted to work at Netscape without any background in computer science and even went to their office, but he was too shy to talk to anyone. Following his own dreams and using money loaned from their father, Elon Musk and his brother started Zip2, a web software company.

It provides an Internet “city guide” for a newspaper publishing company. Zip2 merged with its rival, CitySearch after he failed to become CEO. He later sold it to Compaq and earned $22 million. Today, Zip2 is also known as the online yellow pages.

Paypal

Musk had a vision that online transactions would pave the way for the future success of the money transfer business. Elon Musk founded X.com, an online banking company that later merged with Confinity in 1998, a company that developed security software for handheld devices. When the two businesses merged together, the new company became known as Paypal.

Overthrown from his position as CEO of X.com due to a disagreement over his vision for the two companies, he could only watch as Paypal was sold to eBay in 2002. Paypal is now one of the major online payment systems used worldwide.

Web-based Phone Call

Calling from the web is Musk’s idea to simplify the process of calling. Tap the number on the screen and you will be directed to a company via a call centre. In fact, he even applied for a patent in 1997, which was finally granted in 2001.

Today, Skype, FaceTime and Google Hangouts are using web-based phone calls without the need for landlines.

Location-specific Searches

Musk filed another patent in 1998 for a geographical search system to find location-specific information that is widely used as a part of the Global Positioning System. He came out with this to complement Zip2 as it speeded up the way geographic searches are done. Similar results will be included in the searches to find relevant location, just like Google Maps and Waze today!

Elon Musk is considered as one of the great innovators of the century as he takes technology to new heights by being innovative with added creativity. Many rejected him, ousted him from his own company and he even failed countless times to make Tesla and SpaceX from science fiction to reality.
